THE EMU COLLEGE OF BUSINESS MISSION STATEMENT: MGMT 202 COURSE DESCRIPTION: MGMT 202 is designed to study principles, elements, and practices underlying effective business communication. The course focuses on approaches for planning, creating, and transmitting business information within a variety of business situations found in the global marketplace. 

MGMT 202 COURSE OBJECTIVES: 

1.To increase your understanding of the communication process, theories, and concepts as applied to business communication through textbook readings and course assignments. 

2.To develop your written business communication skills through successful completion of professional e-mail messages, memos, business letters and reports. 

3.To improve your interpersonal and group communication skills through active participation in group activities and assignments. 

4.To develop your understanding of the professional uses of technology in business communication today. 

5.To develop your analytical skills in international and cross-cultural business communication and awareness of challenges required for successful communication in global organizations. 

6.To help you develop an ethical approach for our roles as business communicators through case discussions of business dilemmas and problems. 

MGMT 202 is a BBA core class. Prerequisite(s) WRTG 121 and CTAC 124 Class-Level Restriction Undergraduate standing. 

MGMT 202 CORE COMPETENCIES:

MGMT 202: Business Communication will be 100% online remote (O/R) synchronous in the delivery of lectures and discussions. Zoom video conference platform will utilized to host virtual class interactive lectures at your regular class meeting times.  

  • 100% online remote lecture format (O/R- synchronous) learning will require student self-discipline 
  • Course lectures may be audio/video recorded and made available to other students in this course. As part of your participation in this course, you may be recorded. If you do not wish to be recorded, please contact at: Lbarley@emich.edu the first week of class to discuss alternative arrangements. 
     
  • Students may not record or distribute any class activity without written permission from the instructor, except as necessary as part of approved accommodations for students with disabilities. Students with such accommodations must inform the instructor before recording any class activity.  Any approved recordings may only be used for the student’s own private use. 
     
  • Students on zoom get an alert that they are being recorded. Recordings from virtual classrooms will be sent 24 hours after the virtual zoom video conference classroom to the student’s canvas inbox. 
  • For this 3 credit MGMT 202 (online remote lecture- synchronous) course, 6 hours (approximately) is required per week depending on your current year at EMU, and prior knowledge. This is an estimate and study times will vary on an individual basis depending on student needs (please see the resources outside this course to support you in your success e.g., EMU University Writing Center Online, Holman Center tutoring, International Student Resource Center tutoring, and Halle Library Librarian help etc.). 
  • You are responsible for scheduling, planning, the completing of all MGMT 202 assignments.  All assignment open and close dates are located in the MGMT 202 canvas course shell (see modules tab) and in the tentative schedule of modules section at the end of this syllabus. You are responsible for reading, comprehending textbook concepts and completing all MGMT 202 assignments in the canvas course modules on time. Please read the late policy in the course detailed below in this syllabus. 
  • Please see the MGMT 202 course shell modules tab for all pre-recorded video/audio screen capture lectures, PowerPoint slide files, online discussions, assignment instruction pages, and online tests/quizzes. 
  • Dr. Barley’s virtual office hours (optional attendance), audio/video screen capture lectures of PowerPoints, review sheets for tests (see also practice questions at the end of review sheets) located in canvas modules, Kahoot quizzes (ungraded- Please download Kahoot quiz app at: https://kahoot.com/home/mobile-app/), Business Communication Essentials and Manhard course texts (summaries in margins, figures, tables, examples etc.) and student self-study will all be used to test a student’s understanding of Business Communication Essentials and Goofproofer textbook concepts before you take all tests and quizzes online.  
  • All assignments submitted in MGMT 202 can only be submitted to canvas module 1 time for a grade.  
  • Technical Requirements: Every assignment in MGMT 202 will be uploaded by every student into canvas modules (see canvas modules for all due dates and assignment lock times). This includes all team assignments: 10 PowerPoint Slides on Team Presentation on a Green Company (.ppt only) file, team follow-up memo (.docx word file only), trade show analysis (.docx word file only), and 10 PowerPoint Trade Show slides (.ppt only).   
  • Technical Requirements: Please label all uploaded files to canvas with the following format: Your first and last name, followed by CRN for the course, and the name of the assignment (e.g., JaneSmith50409Resume). 
  • Technical Requirements: All assignment file uploads require a student to have Microsoft Word (.docx), and PowerPoint (.ppt)/Prezi. A student will need to know how to screen share for Zoom Video Conference presentations. You may contact Dr. Barley at: lbarley@emich.edu if you don’t know how to screen share your PowerPoint presentation on Zoom. 
  • During the course’s use of 100% online remote synchronous course format, there will be two 10-minute oral presentations (e.g., the team presentation-see module 4 in the MGMT 202 course shell for due date and instructions and the digital trade show presentation-see the MGMT 202 course shell module 7 for due date and instructions) both of which will be delivered via Zoom video conferencing platform. 
  • Teams will be assigned by Dr. Barley for the 1st 10-minute team presentation on a Michigan-Based green company (near the middle of the course). 
  • At the end of the course, students will form student trade show teams of 2 students of the students’ choosing. Student trade show teams will be responsible for identifying a mutually agreed upon time and day for their team using the proposed video conference presentation schedule and either signing up for the presentation day/time during a zoom video classroom meeting, or emailing the team presentation day/time request to Dr. Barley at Lbarley@emich.edu at least 1 week before the proposed day and time of the presentation. Any teams who do not email Dr. Barley 1 week ahead of the proposed date/time, will lose -5 points (applies to all team members) on the oral presentation. 
  • Once Dr. Barley receives all video conference presentation requests via zoom video conference or via her Lbarley@emich.edu account from the student teams, she will then post the presentation schedule in canvas modules at least 1 week prior to all oral presentations.  
  • Technical Requirements: The Zoom video conference link announcing the 2 oral presentations in MGMT 202 will be sent via your canvas inbox 24 hours before the presentation day/time.  
  • All students will need a laptop with a microphone, or another electronic device (e.g., iPhone/Android phone or tablet) to join the 2 required MGMT 202 oral presentations via Zoom video conference platform. 
  • Webcam is optional but preferred for all oral presentations on Zoom video conferencing platform.  
  • All students are responsible for being on time to the video conference oral presentations and for checking their canvas inbox for the video conference links to join the meetings. 
  • You are responsible for communicating with me via my lbarley@emich.edu account within 15 minutes if you are having difficulty joining the Zoom video Conference and 24 hours of any missed oral presentation due to an emergency. Only documented emergencies emailed 24 hours after a missed oral presentation will be reviewed for make-up oral presentations. Screen shots and EMU-IT ticket numbers are required to be sent via my Lbarley@emich.edu account documenting any technical difficulties within 24 hours. 
  • Missed oral presentations without documentation (e.g., screen shot, EMU-IT ticket number) or legitimate reason will receive a zero on the assignment.

DIGITAL TOOLS/SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD REQUIREMENTS FOR TEST TAKING AND OTHER MATERIALS AND REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COURSE: 

You will need Internet connection and a laptop computer with a microphone to access and complete assignments in the MGMT 202 canvas course shell (see modules tab). 

  • Technical Requirements: Where Can I get free Wi-Fi?: Please click on the link to access the list. Eastern Michigan University, has joined with other area universities to establish a network of on campus outdoor hotspots where people can access WiFi from inside their vehicles. An Eastern hotspot is located at the Convocation Center, Parking Lot B. The strongest signal can be found nearest the entrance of the Convocation Center. Hotspot access is available from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. (EST) and users should remain in their vehicles when using the hotspot due to physical distancing guidance. 

Technical Requirements: Respondus Lock Down Browser and other Policies Relating to Digital Communication: 

This course requires the use of Respondus Lock Down Browser for 3 online exams (graded- all multiple choice) and the one scheduled quiz (ungraded). Please see the assignment descriptions below for more detail on tests and quizzes.  

  • You will have 60 minutes to take each of the three MGMT 202 Tests (3 graded tests – see assignments heading for more detail in this syllabus) 1 time only over a 3-day time span (starting Wednesday, (check your CRN course start time) to Sunday 11:59 p.m. (EST lock time- check canvas modules tab for test lock date). 
  •  You will have 30 minutes to take the 1 MGMT 202 Quiz 1 time only over a 1-day time span (check your CRN course canvas shell start time and lock time for more details).   
  • To begin, click on the link below and download Respondus Lock down Browser.

  • To take an online test in MGMT 202, start Lock Down Browser, login to Canvas (this is the default Web page), and navigate to the exam. (You will not be able to access the exam with a standard web browser.).  
  • If you have a Chromebook, it will be your responsibility to download Respondus for Chromebooks (https://www.emich.edu/elearning/instructors/respondus.php), or if that download is not successful to request a digital copy of the test at least 1 week before all test dates via Dr. Barley's Lbarley@emich.edu account.  
  • You will be allowed to use another electronic device to access the canvas course shell recordings/PowerPoint slides of Lectures and the paper copy or digital Bovee and Thill Business Communication text while taking all three MGMT 202 tests (all are graded-see assignments section of this syllabus for point values) and 1 quiz (ungraded). 
  • You will not be allowed to look up any answers on external sites other than the MGMT 202 canvas course shell and the paperback or digital Bovee and Thill Business Communication primary textbook during the time frame of taking the test or quiz. 
  • You will not be allowed to collaborate with any other person or cheat to answer exam questions using any medium of communication. You must be the sole person completing all exam questions within the time frame of the exam. 
  • I will also be assigning handouts and PowerPoint slides lecture recordings for you to read in different modules on the MGMT 202 course page in canvas, so it will be your responsibility to view these digitally and check your understanding and ask any questions in the virtual office hours (attendance is optional) offered. The virtual office hours are not a replacement for class instruction. They exist to gain clarification and ask questions about assignments. 
  • Technical Requirement: All students will need a laptop with a mic, or another electronic device (e.g., iPhone/Android phone or tablet) to join the 2 required MGMT 202 oral presentations via Zoom video conference platform.  

Zoom video Conference- Oral Presentation Guidelines: 

  • Notes can be used on presentations and Webcam is optional (but preferred if you have a webcam) for all oral presentations.  
  • Please join the Zoom video conference 15 minutes early before your presentation so we can test out your mic volume levels. 
  • Please dress in business casual for all Zoom video Conference presentations (waist up-if using a webcam- optional).  
  • Business casual dress is defined as a nice blouse, sweater for women, or a dress shirt/sweater for men (no caps). 
  • Please mute your microphone when you are not presenting on Zoom video conference and pay close attention to presentations so you know when you are to present and you can unmute your mic to present. 
  • You and another classmate will be composing 10 PowerPoint slides to present on a company of your choice in a 10-minute digital trade show via Zoom video conference on the last two days of class. You are not required to spend any money on the trade show, but if your team does opt to giveaway a gift card, or some other giveaway that does incur a monetary expense, please make the necessary monetary arrangements to equally reimburse all parties for any possible team/individual expenses (not to exceed $25.00 per person) related to any giveaway items used in the trade show. 
  • All trade show topics and materials used in the trade show must be approved by Dr. Barley (see Trade Show Analysis Assignment Sheet details in module 7 in the MGMT 202 course shell).

MGMT 202- ATTENDANCE/PARTICIPATION POLICY:  

  • Since this course is 100% online/remote (synchronous Zoom virtual classroom) in digital format, it is your responsibility to complete all online assignments, tests, quizzes, and participate fully in required online discussions (see modules tab in the MGMT 202 canvas course shell for assigned deadlines associated with online assignments and discussions).  
  • I will host weekly office hours and video conference lectures during the course via Zoom virtual classroom invitations links. 
  • I will send the links via your canvas inbox 24 hours prior to the first weekly virtual office hour scheduled or video conference lecture to join.  
  • Virtual office hours exist if you need help with an assignment, or have a question about the content. The virtual office hours are not required to attend and all lectures will occur in the Zoom video conference environment.

MGMT 202- LATE WORK POLICY:  

  • Any assignment received within 24 hours after the canvas lock down time/date will receive a minus five-point deduction on that assignment. I do not accept any assignment beyond 24 hours of the assignment lock time for credit. If you have a legitimate excuse, please email me via the canvas inbox or at my Lbarley@emich.edu account with the documented reason (e.g., include all doctor’s notes, screen shots, EMU-IT ticket number, and please label any assignment word file with your first and last name, your MGMT 202 CRN, and assignment name e.g., JaneSmith50409Resume) as to why you missed the assignment. 
  • If you experience technical difficulties, it is your responsibility to communicate with me via my Lbarley@emich.edu account within 24 hours. Please also contact the canvas hot-line, or EMU IT to assist you (see. p. 3 of this syllabus to make sure you document in the email to me the EMU-IT ticket number and provide me with a screen shot of the difficulty). If you do not communicate within 24 hours of any assignment due date by emailing Dr. Barley both the EMU-IT ticket number and screen shot of the difficulty/documentation of the issue, the assignment in question will be worth zero points. 

TARDINESS: There will be two oral presentations during this 100% online synchronous course via zoom video conference which will be scheduled by your student teams after the course start date. These two oral presentations will require you and your team to be on time to the Zoom video conference platform. If you are experiencing technical difficulties, it is your responsibility to email at: Lbarley@emich.edu within 15 minutes of any required oral presentation.

MGMT 202 GRADING: You determine your grade by your performance on oral (130 pts.=26%) and written assignments (370 pts.=74%); 500 points total. All assignments will be graded after the due date and will be returned to the student via their individual canvas account. Students may expect prompt return of examinations (auto graded through canvas and 24-48-hour hand graded if you cannot take the test via canvas and require taking tests via emailed Microsoft word copy of the test) and other assignments (1 to 2 weeks) with verbal and/or written explanations of deficiencies. Students may expect a 1 to 4-week turnaround with instructor feedback on longer written assignments. 

  • All assignments can only be submitted one time and will only be graded one time. I will start grading all student uploaded assignments after the lock time specified in canvas modules. 
  • I grade all assignments fairly based on the corresponding assignment descriptions and grading rubrics for the assignment in the MGMT 202 canvas course shell.

Topic: Test #3 and Trade Show Presentations (please email Dr. Barley at: Lbarley@emich.edu (see module 7 for due date and lock time) to let her know when you and your trade show partner will be presenting your 10-minute presentation on trade show dates/times. 

Readings: BCE 3, 4, 6, 9, 10, 11, and 12 and Modules 6, and 7 contents. 

1.Please make sure to read BCE Chapters, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10, 11, and all of modules 6 and 7 file contents.  

  1. Read the trade show analysis file in module 7.

3.Watch the Video/Audio Narration Detailing the Compositional Modes in BCE Chapters 3, 6, and 12 that you will need to know before completing the trade show analysis in module 7.  

 

4.Please review the Compositional Modes for Media Richness: (BCE Chs. 3 ,6, 12) before completing the trade show analysis in module 7.

7.Read and review Module 7 Exceptional Productivity PowerPoint file in module 7. 

 

  1. Read and review Test#3 review sheet in module 7 and study 2 hours for Test#3.
  2. Take Kahoot (ungraded) quizzes to aid in studying for Test#3 –links to takeKahootswill be sent via your canvas inbox. 
  3. Go to canvas module 7 and take Test#3 over BCE 3, 4, 6, 9, 10, 11, and 12 and all Modules 6, and 7 files.RespondusLockdown Browser required for Test#3- (30 Multiple Choice Questions worth 2 pt. each =60 pts.).  

See module 7 for Test #3 open and close dates and lock time: 60 points. 

  • You will only be able to take Test #3 one time during the 3-day test open and close dates/times in canvas module 7 and will have 60 minutes total time once you enter the test using Respondus Lock Down Browser.  
  • You will be able to use your paperback or digital Business Communication Essential textbook and canvas modules 6 and 7 file contents to answer test questions during the test by using an external electronic device.   
  • You are not to use any other external websites on the Internet other than your paperback or digital Business Communication Essentials text and canvas modules 6 and 7 contents to answer test questions.  
  • You are not to collaborate with any other person to complete test answers, but are to be the sole person answering all 30 questions on Test #3. 
  1. Watch Video/Audio Narration of 10 PowerPoint Slide Assignment and read the student sample of 10 Trade Show PowerPoint slides for the trade show in module 7.
  2. Don't forget to have each person in your team upload the completed 10 slides in module 7 (PDF files only):
