a. Behavioral questions: require candidates to craft answers based on their attributes and experiences (they typically deal with teamwork, communication, leadership, conflict resolution, problem solving, mistakes, and job commitment)
b. Use the S.T.A.R. approach (S/T Describe the situation or task you had to address, A stands for approach you took to resolve the situation or complete the task at hand, R stands for the results you accomplished) to answer Behavioral questions. Types of buffers-(a buffer is a neutral, noncontroversial statement that is closely related to the point of the messages but doesn't convey the bad news). You job application was very competitive in scope. However, the candidate pool was very competitive and we have chosen to offer the job to another candidate who was willing to travel.

- How to use the indirect approach- The indirect approach is used in writing bad news when the issue is of high importance to the audience, and the news will come as a shock (e.g., When you have to fire someone, and they aren't aware of the reasons why).
- 1. Open with a buffer (paragraph #1).
- 2. Build up the reasons for the situation or decision (paragraph #2).
- 3. Present the negative news (paragraph #3).
- 4. Offer any additional information that will help the audience (paragraph #4).
- 5. Close on a respectful note (paragraph #5)
- How to use the direct approach- The direct approach is used when the situation is an emergency, or you know you need to get someone's attention, you know the audience prefers the direct approach, the issue to the audience is of low importance, the news will not come as a shock (e.g., Declining a candidate who was entering the screening phase of the interview process and is prepared for either an acceptance or declination of the job offer).
