THE EMU COLLEGE OF BUSINESS MISSION STATEMENT: MGMT 202 COURSE DESCRIPTION: MGMT 202 is designed to study principles, elements, and practices underlying effective business communication. The course focuses on approaches for planning, creating, and transmitting business information within a variety of business situations found in the global marketplace.
MGMT 202 COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1.To increase your understanding of the communication process, theories, and concepts as applied to business communication through textbook readings and course assignments.
2.To develop your written business communication skills through successful completion of professional e-mail messages, memos, business letters and reports.
3.To improve your interpersonal and group communication skills through active participation in group activities and assignments.
4.To develop your understanding of the professional uses of technology in business communication today.
5.To develop your analytical skills in international and cross-cultural business communication and awareness of challenges required for successful communication in global organizations.
6.To help you develop an ethical approach for our roles as business communicators through case discussions of business dilemmas and problems.
MGMT 202 is a BBA core class. Prerequisite(s) WRTG 121 and CTAC 124 Class-Level Restriction Undergraduate standing.

Details about MGMT 202: Business Communication 100% online asynchronous format:
- MGMT 202: Business Communication will be 100% online asynchronous in the delivery of the course. 100% online – asynchronous which means there are no face-to-face classroom meetings, no zoom video conference classrooms. All course communications will occur through myemich.edu email, canvas inbox email, the MGMT 202 course shell (see modules) and optional student requested office hour attendance via zoom video conference); learning will require student self-discipline.
- Course lectures will be pre-recorded audio/video (screen share) and will made available to other students in this course via the MGMT 202 course shell (see modules tab).
- As part of your participation in this course, you will be pre-recorded giving one oral presentations via zoom (at the convenience of your team) and the student will be uploading the entire oral team presentation zoom recordings mp4 file via canvas modules 4. If you do not wish to be recorded, please contact at: Lbarley@emich.edu the first week of class to discuss alternative arrangements.
- Students may not record or distribute any class activity without written permission from the instructor, except as necessary as part of approved accommodations for students with disabilities. Students with such accommodations must inform the instructor before recording any class activity. Any approved recordings may only be used for the student’s own private use.
- For this 3 credit MGMT 202 (100%- asynchronous) course, 6 hours (approximately) is required per week depending on your current year at EMU, and prior knowledge. This is an estimate and study times will vary on an individual basis depending on student needs (please see the resources outside this course to support you in your success e.g., EMU University Writing Center Online, Holman Center tutoring, International Student Resource Center tutoring, and Halle Library Librarian help etc.).
- You are responsible for scheduling, planning, the completing of all MGMT 202 assignments (including 1 oral presentation which will be pre-recorded by your team via zoom video conference at a mutually convenient time for all team members). All team members are required to upload the 1 required MGMT 202 oral presentation zoom recording mp4 file and 10 required PowerPoints by the assignment date and lock time. All assignment open and lock dates and times are located in the MGMT 202 canvas course shell (see modules tab) and the MGMT 202: Business Communication calendar.
- You are responsible for reading, comprehending textbook concepts and completing all MGMT 202 assignments in the canvas course modules on time. Please read the late policy in the course detailed below in this syllabus.
- Please see the MGMT 202 course shell modules tab for all pre-recorded video/audio screen capture lectures, PowerPoint slide files, online discussions, assignment instruction pages, and online tests/quizzes.
- Dr. Barley’s virtual office hours (optional attendance with 24-hour notice via myemich.edu), audio/video screen capture lectures of PowerPoints, review sheets for tests (see also practice questions at the end of review sheets) located in canvas modules, Kahoot quizzes (ungraded- Please download Kahoot quiz app at: https://kahoot.com/home/mobile-app/), Principles of Management text (summaries in margins, figures, tables, examples etc.) and student self-study will all be used to test a student’s understanding of Principles of Management textbook concepts before you take all tests and quizzes online.
- All assignments submitted in MGMT 202 can only be submitted to canvas module 1 time for a grade.
- Technical Requirements: Every assignment in MGMT 202 will be uploaded by every student into canvas course shell modules (see canvas modules for all due dates and assignment lock times). This includes all team assignments: Zoom recording link (mp4 file) of team presentation on a Green Company; 10 PowerPoint Slides on Team Presentation on a Green Company (.ppt only) file, team follow-up memo (.docx word file only), and 32-day commitment (.docx or xlsx.)
- I cannot accept pages files for any assignment upload. Please make arrangements to upload all assignments using .docx, xlsx., ppt., Prezi link, zoom recording link, depending on the assignment specifications in the modules tab on the MGMT 202 course shell.
- Technical Requirements: Please label all uploaded files to canvas with the following format: Your first and last name, followed by CRN for the course, and the name of the assignment (e.g., JaneSmith50409Resume).
- Technical Requirements: All assignment file uploads require a student to have Microsoft Word (.docx), and PowerPoint (.ppt)/Prezi. A student will need to know how to screen share for the Zoom Video recordings of team oral presentation (all zoom recording links MP4 files will be uploaded via canvas into individual student accounts). - As previously mentioned, during the course’s use of 100% online asynchronous course format, there will be one 10-minute oral presentation (e.g., the team presentation-see module 4 in the MGMT 202 course shell for due date and instructions) which will be delivered via a private Zoom video conferencing platform with your team (without the instructor) a mutually convenient time. Then, the zoom recording link mp4 file will be uploaded via the canvas course shell by the assignment due date and lock time. All team members are required to upload the final team zoom video mp4 file to the MGMT 202 course shell.
- Teams will be assigned by Dr. Barley for the 1st 10-minute team presentation on a Michigan-Based green company (near the middle of the course). Michigan-Based Green company teams will be responsible for identifying a mutually agreed upon time and day for their team to deliver and record their team oral presentation via zoom video conferencing at least 1 week before the proposed day and time of the presentation. The oral presentation team is responsible for distributing the zoom video conferencing recording to the team at least 1 week prior to the final oral presentation due date and lock time. All team members are required to upload final zoom video recording link and 10 required PowerPoint slides to oral presentation assignments by the due date and lock time specified in the MGMT 202 course shell.
- Technical Requirements: 1 oral presentation with your team (1st oral presentation is with no more than 6 team members) via recorded zoom video conferencing. The 1 oral presentation video recording mp4 file is to be uploaded on the MGMT 202 canvas course shell by each person in your team by the oral presentation due date and lock time.
- All students will need a free zoom video conferencing account.
- All students will need a laptop with a microphone, or another electronic device (e.g., iPhone/Android phone or tablet) to record 1 mp4 zoom video conference recording file with your team (alone without entire class or Dr. Barley) via zoom.
- Webcam is optional, but preferred for the 1 oral presentation on Zoom video conferencing platform with your team.
- All students are responsible for being on time to the private team zoom video conference oral presentation and for checking their canvas inbox for the video conference links to join the meetings your student team sends out to join the private zoom video conference and zoom team presentation recording link.
Zoom video Conference- Oral Presentation Guidelines:
- Notes can be used in the presentation and Webcam is optional (but preferred if you have a webcam) for the oral presentation.
- Please join the Zoom video conference 15 minutes early before your presentation so your team can test out your mic volume levels.
- Please dress in business casual for all Zoom video Conference presentations (waist up-if using a webcam- optional).

- Please mute your microphone when you are not presenting on Zoom video conference and pay close attention to presentations so you know when you are to present and you can unmute your mic to present.
- Each member of the oral presentation team will be required to upload 10 PowerPoint slides via the MGMT 202 canvas course shell by the oral presentation due date and lock time which will be used to present for both 10-minute private zoom oral presentation recordings required for MGMT 202. .
- All Michigan-Based green companies (1st required oral presentation) must be approved by Dr. Barley (see Team Presentation on a Michigan-Based Company; module 4.
- You are responsible for communicating with me via my lbarley@emich.edu account within if you are having difficulty joining the Zoom video Conference and 24 hours of any missed oral presentation due to an emergency. Only documented emergencies emailed 24 hours after a missed oral presentation will be reviewed for make-up oral presentations. Screen shots and EMU-IT ticket numbers are required to be sent via my Lbarley@emich.edu account documenting any technical difficulties within 24 hours.
- Missed oral presentations without documentation (e.g., screen shot, EMU-IT ticket number) or legitimate reason will receive a zero on the assignment.

DIGITAL TOOLS/SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD REQUIREMENTS FOR TEST TAKING AND OTHER MATERIALS AND REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COURSE:
You will need Internet connection and a laptop computer with a microphone to access and complete assignments in the MGMT 202 canvas course shell (see modules tab).
- Technical Requirements: Where Can I get free Wi-Fi?: Please click on the link to access the list. Eastern Michigan University, has joined with other area universities to establish a network of on campus outdoor hotspots where people can access Wi-Fi from inside their vehicles. An Eastern hotspot is located at the Convocation Center, Parking Lot B. The strongest signal can be found nearest the entrance of the Convocation Center. Hotspot access is available from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. (EST) and users should remain in their vehicles when using the hotspot due to physical distancing guidance.
Technical Requirements: Respondus Lock Down Browser and other Policies Relating to Digital Communication:
This course requires the use of Respondus Lock Down Browser for 3 online exams (graded- all multiple choice), the one scheduled quiz and pre and post-test Assessment of Your Knowledge of MGMT 202 concepts (complete/incomplete= 5 points available after completion of each pre/posttest – 10 points extra credit possible). Please see the assignment descriptions below for more detail on tests and quizzes.
- You will have one hour and 15 minutes (75 minutes total) to take each of the three MGMT 202 Tests (3 graded tests – see canvas modules and assignments heading below in this syllabus for more detail) 1 time only over a duration of the test open time/day and test lock time/day (check your CRN course shell start time and lock times/days)
- You will have 45 minutes to take the 1 MGMT 202 Quiz 1 time only over a 1-day time span (check your CRN course canvas shell start time and lock time for more details).
- You will have 75 minutes to take the pre and post-test Assessment of Your Knowledge of MGMT 202 concepts which serve as the Department of Management Assessment tool (complete/incomplete= 5 points available after completion of each pre/posttest – 10 points extra credit possible

- To take an online test in MGMT 202, start Lock Down Browser, login to Canvas (this is the default Web page), and navigate to the exam. (You will not be able to access the exam with a standard web browser.).
- If you have a Chromebook, it will be your responsibility to download Respondus for Chromebooks (https://www.emich.edu/elearning/instructors/respondus.php), or if that download is not successful to contact Dr. Barleyat least 1 week before all test dates via Dr. Barley's Lbarley@emich.edu account to work out an alternative to access the digital tests.
- You will be allowed to use another electronic device to access the canvas course shell recordings/PowerPoint slides of Lectures and the paper copy or digital Principles of Management (POM) text while taking all three MGMT 202 tests (all are graded-see assignments section of this syllabus for point values), 1 quiz (graded) and pre-test/post-text extra credit assessment of MGMT 202 knowledge.
- You will not be allowed to look up any answers on external sites other than the MGMT 202 canvas course shell and the paperback or digital Principles of Management (POM) primary textbook during the time frame of taking the test or quiz.
- You will not be allowed to collaborate with any other person or cheat to answer exam questions using any medium of communication. You must be the sole person completing all exam questions within the time frame of the exam.
- I will also be assigning handouts and PowerPoint slides lecture recordings for you to read in different modules on the MGMT 202 course page in canvas, so it will be your responsibility to view these digitally and check your understanding and ask any questions in the virtual office hours (attendance is optional for the virtual office hours and purely based on student need; office hours are not recorded) offered. The virtual office hours are not a replacement for class instruction. They exist to gain clarification and ask questions about assignments.
- Technical Requirement: All students will need a zoom video conferencing account, a laptop with a mic, or another electronic device (e.g., iPhone/Android phone or tablet) to join the 1 required MGMT 202 oral presentation via Zoom video conference platform which your team will record and upload the zoom video recording mp4 file to the MGMT 202 canvas course shell by the oral presentation due date and lock time.

MGMT 202- ATTENDANCE/PARTICIPATION POLICY:
- Since this course is 100% online (asynchronous) in digital format, it is your responsibility to complete all online assignments, tests, quizzes, and participate fully in required online discussions (see modules tab in the MGMT 202 canvas course shell for assigned deadlines associated with online assignments and discussions).
- Most assignment due dates will be on Sunday by 11:59 p.m. (EST)
- You will have access to all assignments on the course start date (see EMU calendar for official start date) and will be able to turn any assignments you complete in early to accommodate your summer schedule.
- Please note the 1 team oral presentation will need to be coordinated with your team through zoom video conferencing (Please see the MGMT 202 course shell modules 4 for more details).
- Also, the 3 required multiple-choice tests and 1 quiz (ungraded) and pre-test/post-test assessment of MGMT 202 concepts will have a 5-day duration where you may go out and take the test/quiz one time during the open and lock time (EST).
- Because the course is a 7-week accelerated summer format and this MGMT 202 course is required to adhere to the College of Business competencies and outcomes, there may be some Sunday’s where multiple assignments may be due via canvas modules during the 7-week summer 3 session.
- See the modules for the canvas calendar which will open on the first day of class (see EMU calendar for official start date) to plan your course of study and assignment submissions via canvas modules.
- I will send reminders of assignment deadlines via canvas inbox or myemich.edu. Please feel free to reach out to me and ask questions to gain clarification at least 24-hours (before 9:00 p.m. EST M-F and I will get back within 24-48 hours) before any assignment is due to my Lbarley@emich.edu account. I am more than happy to set up a private zoom video conference to clarify any assignment expectations or deepen any concept addressed in the course.
- I will host weekly office hours and video conference lectures during the course via Zoom virtual classroom invitations links (see office hours posted in this syllabus; office hours are not required. Virtual office hours exist if you need help with an assignment, or have a question about the content. The virtual office hours are not required to attend, are not recorded, and are purely based on student need. Students are required to email at least 24-hours in advance to Dr. Barley’s Lbarley@emich.edu account to set up a private zoom video conference hour.
MGMT 202- LATE WORK POLICY:
- Any assignment received within 24 hours after the canvas lock down time/date will receive a minus five-point deduction on that assignment. I do not accept any assignment beyond 24 hours of the assignment lock time for credit. If you have a legitimate excuse, please email me via the canvas inbox or at my Lbarley@emich.edu account with the documented reason (e.g., include all doctor’s notes, screen shots, EMU-IT ticket number, and please label any assignment word file with your first and last name, your MGMT 202 CRN, and assignment name e.g., JaneSmith50409Resume) as to why you missed the assignment.
- If you experience technical difficulties, it is your responsibility to communicate with me via my Lbarley@emich.edu account within 24 hours. Please also contact the canvas hot-line, or EMU IT to assist you (Please see this syllabus for EMU-IT contact information to make sure you document in the email to me the EMU-IT ticket number and provide me with a screen shot of the difficulty). If you do not communicate within 24 hours of any assignment due date by emailing Dr. Barley both the EMU-IT ticket number and screen shot of the difficulty/documentation of the issue, the assignment in question will be worth zero points.
TARDINESS: There will be one team presentations during this 100% online asynchronous course via zoom video conference which will be scheduled by your student teams after the course start date. The team oral presentation will require you and your team to be on time to the Zoom video conference platform. If you are experiencing technical difficulties, it is your responsibility to email at: Lbarley@emich.edu within 24 hours of any required oral presentation.
Students may expect the following: Impartial, respectful treatment including:
- Reasonable opportunities to ask questions and express ideas;
- Respect for your privacy (FERPA) for certain educational, personal, and health related information;
- Knowledge of the grading system early in the semester and the absence of unfair, capricious or discriminatory grading categories. This should include explicit and early description of the instructor's policy for penalties regarding failure to attend and/or participate in class;
- Prompt return of examinations and other assignments with verbal and/or written explanations of deficiencies;
- Posted office hours, scheduled at times most beneficial to students and advance knowledge, when possible, of cancellation of class or office hours;
- Reasonable accommodations upon the provision of documentation provided by the Disability Resource Center.
MGMT 202 GRADING: You determine your grade by your performance on oral (30 pts.) and written assignments (470 points); 500 points total.
All assignments will be graded after the due date and feedback will be provided to the student via their individual canvas account. Students may expect prompt return of examinations (auto graded through canvas and 24-48-hour hand graded if you cannot take the test via canvas). Students may expect a 1 to 4-week turnaround with instructor feedback on longer written assignments (e.g., discussion post assignments, cover letter; resume, progress report).

I do not accept any late work beyond 24 hours of the assignment lock time (please see late work policy). I require the reason, screenshot, and proof of any late file upload. Please submit any late work via my Lbarley@emich.edu.
- It is the student’s responsibility to check the professor’s grading comments after the assignment is submitted and graded via canvas to improve on future assignments. Resubmissions are not permitted after professor feedback for a grade.
- Every student in MGMT 202 is required to upload all MGMT 202 assignments their individual canvas account. This includes the team oral presentation zoom recording mp4 file and other written team assignments.

ORAL ASSIGNMENTS: You will be required to give one presentation that you and your classmate(s) have personally researched, written, and prepared for this class. Your instructor will evaluate the oral presentation. See the MGMT 202 canvas course page (modules tab) for a full description of the oral assignment.
- Any student team who does not email Dr. Barley 1 week ahead with their team’s private zoom oral presentations date/time, company choice, and team composition will lose -5 points (applies to all team members) on the final oral presentation grade (email Dr. Barley at Lbarley@emich.edu). Please make sure your team records the private team zoom conference oral presentation and that your zoom host sends the zoom recording mp4 file to everyone in the team 1 week prior to the team oral presentation due date and lock time specified in the canvas modules. Each team member is responsible for uploading the team video conference recording mp4 file. If a team member fails to upload the final team presentation zoom video conference recording mp4 file, zero points will be assigned to that team member for the team presentation.
1) Remote Oral Team Presentation on a Michigan Based Green Company via Zoom video Conference Platform (10 minutes maximum per group of 6 people maximum- notes can be used in the presentation computer laptop, tablet, or cellular microphone is required, webcam is optional- all team members receive the same grade). Student teams will set up and record the team oral presentation on a Michigan Based Green Company via zoom video conference. All team members are responsible for uploading the team zoom video recording (mp4 file) of the team presentation to their private canvas accounts by the oral presentation due date and lock time. (Please see module 4 for more details on the Team Presentation on a Michigan-Based Green Company (B-corp) assignment): 25 points
2) Remote Q&A Session following Team Presentation on a Michigan Based Company via Zoom video Conference Platform: 3 questions will be asked by Dr. Barley (via canvas inbox) of your team ahead of the private team oral presentation zoom conference on the Michigan-Based company your team selects. The team will need to field the 3 questions in the same zoom recording the team presents the oral presentation on a Michigan-Based company. Make sure all 3 questions are answered after the team presents the team presentation on a Michigan-Based Green company. All team members receive the same grade for the team members who answer Dr. Barley’s 3 questions; it is not required that every team member answer the 3 questions; your team may assign 1-3 people to answer the questions for the team: 5 points
